FDA and barcoding
|
The US FDA has published on 26th February 2004 a new rule [319 KB]
related to barcoding. This is the result of several months consultation about the most efficient way to reduce medication errors throughout the drugs lifecycle. The rule prescribes the drug manufacturer to label with a linear simbology pharmaceuticals and biological products at each product level, down to the unit of use. Barcoding has to comply in particular with the GS1 System. The FDA publishes further a cost/benefit analysis, demonstrating that the appropriate linear labelling will reduct healthcare costs in the US in the short and mi-term, because of the reduction of medication errors (and the correlated reduction of patient stays in hospitals).

FDA and Drug Counterfaiting
|
FDA opened in September 2003 a large consultation about the best way to limitate or avoid drug counterfaiting. The FDA report comes to the conclusion that the best way to secure drugs against counterfaiting is to use Radio Frequency Tags, specially the ePC solution which has been developped by the Massachusett Institute of Technology, and which is now brought on the market by EPC Global Inc, with the lead of GS1 and GS1 US. The FDA report can be downloaded [4'010 KB]
