On behalf of GS1 France, Medinorma LLC has made a study with the Hospital Pharmacy of the Teaching Hospital Rouen. The study consisted in modelling the current supply chain with blood derivates, from the ordering process to the administration to the patient. This product range is strongly regulated in France, and therefore Hospitals have implemented for nearly 10 years, solutions to document the detailled administration to the patients. A second modelling has been made which takes account of a full use of the GS1 System, which includes product marking (by lot number on each individual dose), locations, staff and patients, etc. The modelling includes also the full functionnalities of eProcurement, which deployement has started in 2006 across 17 university hospitals in France, and which is based on the GS1 System.
The two modelling have been measured in detail, so that a one year simulation has been made to compare the time spent by the various staff members, by function : technician, pharmacist, nurses. The result of this work has been presented by the Chief Pharmacist, Bernard Dieu, at the GS1 HUG conference in Paris (September 2006).
